Auto mount USB HDD doesn't mount, HDD does work
-
Hello,
I have followed the steps from the wiki to automatically mount my USB HDD (which is a 250GB SATA drive connected with an adaptor) and copy the (currently, mostly empty) RetroPie folders over after a reboot by creating the folder it requires.
However although RetroPie does detect the USB HDD and I know it works when mounted, since I was able to make the folder using the RetroPie CLI, it doesn't seem to actually mount it at all on boot to the right directory it needs + copy the folder structure, for whatever reason I can't figure out for now.
If any more info is needed please tell me to provide it, but some more info should be listed below that should be necessary:
- Partition: /dev/sda1
- File System: ext4 (formatted via gparted)
- RetroPie version: 4.4 + updated all system packages via apt
- Boot method for RetroPie OS: PINN 3.2 (I installed RetroPie from its menu)
Thanks for any assistance. (Note that using the SD card, or using the manual way isn't that practical a solution. I'd rather not faff with /etc/fstab)

Is the
usbmount
service installed and enabled ? Did you create theretropie-mount
folder on the disk before inserting ?Note that using the SD card, or using the manual way isn't that practical a solution. I'd rather not faff with /etc/fstab
Why ? If you intend to have the disk mounted all the time, why not adding it to
/etc/fstab
- it's just one line and you don't need theusbmount
service to be installed/enabled. -
Oddly it mounts fine using the same setup except formatted to FAT32 - it mounted itself when it booted ES after inserting the USB. Maybe I changed a setting of some sort, but at least it's working now.
Not like I probably need to add files bigger than 4GB since I only plan to go as far as PS1 anyway... :P
As for /etc/fstab I'd probably ask something pathetically stupid about it, and would rather not waste time for people who need to answer more important questions/fix bugs or whatever :p

My local LUG had a motto - don't just ask to ask, ask directly. That's why the forum (including the Help & Support category) exists.
