      I am using a raspberry pi 3 model b
      IPAC 4 with connected joystick and buttons
      Updated RetroPie software

      I’m trying to kidproof my setup as much as I can. As you know, when launching a game in retropie there is a short display that says, “press a button to configure” (where you can change emulators, etc). Is there any way to turn it off or designate a particular button to press to configure? I’m concerned young/impatient kids will be hitting buttons during that window. Thoughts? Thanks!!

        Go into RetroPie-Setup/Configuration / Tools and scroll down to RunCommand. Change the first option (Launch Menu) to Disabled.

        It also helps immensely if you configure EmulationStation to use the 'Kids Mode' UI.
