I picked up a set of wireless SNES style controllers thinking it'd be fun to play some NES & SNES games on my cocktail arcade cabinet.

It's mostly working great. But I'm having an issue with the controllers in one game, the Legend of Zelda (NES).

It seems like in this game the controller has a mind of its own. I press and release right on the D pad and sometimes the character runs all the way across the screen. Other times it seems to ignore button presses entirely.

I was about to return the controllers but after trying them out with a few other games, I don't seem to be having the issues in other games.

Are there some retroarch or other settings that would affect controllers? Could it be the rom?

Never mind. It's the controllers. Same problem started happening in lots of games now. Time to send them back.
