lr-mess vs lr-mess2016

I just got Creativision, Arcadia 2001, and Bally Astrocade working in lr-mess.
However, they do not work in lr-mess2016. I was messing with this because I thought maybe the emulation would be better in the later version of MESS.
Verbose log shows the place where they deviate in behavior.
lr-mess (launch and then exit after the game runs successfully):

I see from other posts that this is common with lr-mess2016. What has me curious is that they seem to diverge at the softlist stage. It's not clear to me whether anyone has ever gotten lr-mess2016 working?
