      Hello,

If I install the x86 version of RetroPie on an existing PC, this would be on top of the OS right?

I am looking for basically a retro games launcher, and Lutris just doesn't cut it in my opinion so I would like it to be more of an application than an OS if that makes sense so I could launch it when I want to play games then exit out and go back to my main OS.

      Would this be doable?

RetroPie is not and OS in itself, so you can install it on-top of an existing OS, but it has to be Linux. If you're looking for just a front-end/launcher, then RetroPie might be too much.
The front-end/launcher used by RetroPie is Emulationstation, you can use that separately if you want, without installing the entire RetroPie setup. Or, you can pick another front-end - Lauchbox if you're Windows, Attract Mode works both on Windows/Linux, Pegasus also.

Thank you, that is was I was confused about. I have a Pi with RetoPie but of course that is all that is on there so I didn't know how it worked with an existing setup.

This is for a Linux system, I use Launchbox on Windows but there are not any great alternatives on Linux, and I just wanted something with a nice front end for retro games (hence not just using rertroarch), and as I said Lutris just doesn't do it for me.

I have never heard of Attract mode I might check that out!

I knew ES was available as standalone, but that one is no longer maintained. I had heard the one with RetroPie still gets updated as needed, is this true?

Yes, it is - and you can also install it separately from https://github.com/RetroPie/Emulationstation.
