Struggling with controller setup

Does anyone have a like and/or advice for someone who just got their Pi this afternoon on how to setup retropie to handle a retrolink n64 controller? I have spent the last 5 hours unsuccessfully trying to get the buttons to functions correctly.

What have you done so far? What errors are you encountering? There's not a whole lot anyone can do to help you without any more information.
You said you just got your pi this afternoon. Have you read through any of the documentation provided in the RetroPie wiki yet?
