so I'm trying to update retroarch to 1.7.8 v4 but the last version it will update to is 1.7.6, is there any way to update to the latest version?

@tobas There's ways to update it by other means but they don't have the appropriate retropie-specific patches like the insert coin patch for arcade emulators, and other stuff. The devs will update it when they've tested its stability.

Saying that, I wouldn't mind if someone would post a modified retroarch.sh script with 1.7.8.4 for users to test with :)

so, I just realized that I'm not even sure how to update retroarch at all. I usually just hit 'update all packages'. is there a specific menu option for updating retroarch that I'm just not seeing?

Not sure if I was clear, but 1.7.8 is not available yet. Updating from retropie-setup won't update retroarch right now. I noticed 1.7.8.4 on the github pull requests so it's coming sooner or later. I tested it on my pi4 and despite a minor issue with the fps counter not working on non-3d accelerated emulators and not being able to configure shaders through retropie-setup (it works if done through retroarch), seems ok so far.

Funny thing - this ended up being the answer to my question here:
                https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/23603/retropie-4-5-1-control-and-or-emulators-lock-when-attempting-to-stream-to-twitch-also-how-do-i-stream-to-twitch/8

Caveats - backup your system, YMMV, probably unsupported, etc. It's working for me so far though.

Yeah, sorry I didn't mean to imply that updating the setup script and "core" packages would get you beyond 1.7.6, just pointing out the instructions to the OP.

But yeah, I too wish there was an easy way to update from source to the latest Retroarch build. There are some recent critical upgrades to retroachievements which includes compatibility with the latest achievement logic features as well as the introduction of PlayStation achievements that comes with 1.7.8 v4.

Hoping for an update soon 🙏
