change shader within a game

I have kept a backup file of my joypad configuration from an old retropie setup.
In that configuration file I had added:input_shader_next_btn = "10" input_shader_prev_btn = "7"I tried to apply these on my latest setup but it's not working. The buttons 10 and 7 are up and down. I press hotkey + up and hotkey + down but nothing happens.
What am I missing? Should I edit retroarch.cfg instead of my joypad cfg?
