I am looking to recreate the gaming experience as closely as I can so like to use repro controllers for each system.

I was wondering what controllers are recommended for ps1 games, ideally i would like something that is usb and is indistinguishable from an origional controller, there are loads of different ones available but i would imagine the quality is pretty poor with most of them...

I could probably go down the route of an origional controller with a USB adapter but getting a decent old one would be quite difficult I would imagine.

      Raspberry Pi 400 - overclocked to 2.3GHz
      Theme - Comic book
      Emulators: All of them...
Roms: Pretty much all of them...
Favourite games: Circus Charlie, Gorf, Gauntlet Legends
      Controllers: Mayflash F101

@chubsta Keep in mind many if not all of the wireless versions of the controllers out there, including many or most I may list below can be used wirelessly, wired with a cable, or wired only. So you can get wireless versions and just play with a cable if you want flexibility, or just go pure wireless for cost.

The F310 and F710 by Logitech and pretty well rated controllers for Retropie. One is wireless and the other is simply the wired version.

I personally enjoyed my older original PS3 controllers on Retropie. PS3/PS4 controllers will probably have the best PS1 feel to them and though I haven't used Logitech, it looks like it would feel pretty natural as well.

I've also tested the Xbox 360 controllers on Retropie and they play pretty well but you need a USB dongle for them to be wireless. It's not very expensive but still adds to the cost. I had a wired version of the Xbox 360 that worked great. Also I had an Amazon version of the Xbox 360 wired controller and it was great as well but one of the buttons kind of died after a few months.

I've recently been playing with the 8bitdo SN30 Pro (wireless but I can use the cable for wired. They also sell a wired version), great for the older consoles, and they can do just fine for PS1but the triggers are much too close to be naturally comfortable for me for PS1 or N64 but I'm still getting a feel because I like they are small for travelling.

The 8bitdo SN30 Pro+ looks like a winner too but I haven't had the time to make investing in one worthwhile yet. It looks similar to a Wii Pro controller.

I have no experience with the Wii U Pro controllers but many people seem to love them for RetroPie.

Power A brand makes a 360 similar wired controller but it felt too cheap to me.

Be aware, there are many knock off brands of the above name-brand controllers, some of which probably work just fine according to some, but none that I have experience with so I can't help in that area.

I hope this gives you a starting point.

@chubsta see if you can get hold of the PlayStation Mini console. Two USB PS1 controllers are included (but sadly not the analog ones)
