ScummVM and multi-cd games

The Internet Archive has released a few of those classic 1990's multi-cd CD-ROM adventure games as free downloads. Games like Phantasmagoria (7CD) and Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within (6CD).
Supposedly these titles should work with ScummVM (2.0). I never played these back then so I'd like to try them out using RetroPie. Has anyone gotten these to work? It is stated that "In general, ScummVM does not deal very well with multi-CD games".
The games in questions are delivered as ISO images, and I recall that those don't work straight away (you can't install them) - one needs to unpack all the contents to a folder. Could these work just by unpacking all the ISO "cds" into one single folder?
