How to Configure a 4-Way Joystick to Work in 8-Way Games?

In MAME for Windows, I could play 8-way games with my 4-way joystick, because it interpreted Left+Up = Diagonal Left Up. But when I run 8-way games in RetroPie, I get some very blocky movements - there is no diagonal happening.
lr-mame2003 - if that matters.
Is there somewhere I can configure this in RetroPie?
