Bezel Project without 'TV frame'?
-
I've been digging through different threads, the github guide and the launchbox forum thread for the bezel project but could not find anything detailed about this.
I think the developer crew did an excellent job on this - however I'm not a big fan of the black/grey TV frame. Is there a way to use the Bezels without that curved overlay TV frame?(besides removing the frame from every single game bezel image file)
-
@timmay The bezel is an image, removing the TV frame from it would mean re-doing the bezel itself and adjusting its size to fit the screen - it's not a configuration issue.
-
@mitu Is that the same problem for me? I have (2) machines that I have assembled (first time being exposed to anything RPI) and both have used 19" screens. And the bezels take over the left and right side of the playing field... any suggestions? Or is the bezel project not meant for my 19"s?
-
The bezels are created for a certain resolution, not screen size. Check with the Bezel Project what is the resolution they support.
-
@mitu So if I check and my screen(s) resolution is not supported... then there are no manual tweaks that can be made other than literally re-making every bezel by hand. Is this a correct statement?
-
@ooverkilll I think so. What's your resolution ?
-
@ooverkilll at least one of those looks like a 4:3 monitor (or is that just the viewing angle playing tricks?), while the bezelproject's bezels are designed for 16:9 widescreen. (See how much taller the D-Pad in Donkey Kong's instruction panel is than it is wide. The images are being stretched/squished to fit your screen. The original image seen below is still a little off-square, but much closer to it, it seems:
These games were originally made for 4:3 monitors (sometimes 3:4, which is just a regular monitor turned on its side.) When you play them on a widescreen display, you can either stretch the image to fit the screen (looks awful, please don't), or you can have it display in the correct aspect ratio and only use the middle of the screen with the black "pillarboxing" on the sides.
The bezels are meant to cover this black space on the sides. Most of the time, you won't have any black space because your display is already in the same aspect ratio as your image. Only in your vertical games, will there be a small pillar box effect, but you still can't use the widescreen bezels for this.
I found a handful of vertical bezels for 4:3 displays, here, and here, and here.

@sleve_mcdichael Thanks to both you and @mitu . I downloaded and used that different bezel and adjusted the resolution within retroarch. It worked. I didn't realize that you could set the overall Aspect ratio in retropie... and also could manually adjust the scaling and resolution for each rom if necessary.

@timmay - I have created a repo with TV frame removed via a script which should be usable for other systems:

@koda9901 How do i run this or any other script that will strip away the tv borders from every bezel on the retropie?
-
This isn't something i've automated to run within retropie.
