Save State not working

I just got my retro pie up and running. The image was one I had lying around from about a year ago so I made sure to run retropiesetup and update the script and then run update all packages. All my roms are working, but my saves aren't absolutely nothing happens when I press select + any other button I can find on the controller, including right button and trigger.
To be sure I ran update core packages from source and repair romdirs both from the retropiesetup menu in the terminal.

Can you give an example of a game/emulator where Save states are not working ? If you use the Save State entry from the RGUI, does it work ?

Thanks for the response. I looked at the controller config and my hotkey button wasn't set to select. Once I did that everything worked as expected.
