MAME 2003 Sounds (Samples)
-
Hey All,
Been battling this one for a few days and I THINK I followed all the suggestions here and across the net. Basically I am using retropie and am using MAME2003 for my older arcade roms. All works well except some games like Donkey Kong and Galaga are missing some sounds. I know this is a common issue so I downloaded the samples and placed them in several locations to try and get them to work but both games report not being able to find them when the game loads. The ROM names and the sample names match and the samples are currently in \bios\mame2003\samples
Any other suggestions?
Thanks for any and all help!

Make sure it's enabled in
/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-core-options.cfg
mame2003-samples = "enabled"
I don't use mame2003, for advmame the samples have to be in the samples folder for the same name as the rom (and unzipped), also the samples have to be for the right romset, 0.78 in your case. I think advmame samples are the same as mame2003 though. I think I used samples from twisty's site, the older sample section.
e.g.
/home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003/samples/dkong/
-rwxr-xr-x 1 pi pi 6014 Dec 19 2018 dkstomp.wav
-rw-r--r-- 1 pi pi 14208 Dec 19 2018 effect00.wav
-rw-r--r-- 1 pi pi 61812 Dec 19 2018 effect01.wav
-rw-r--r-- 1 pi pi 46954 Dec 19 2018 effect02.wav
-rwxr-xr-x 1 pi pi 7765 Dec 19 2018 jump.wav
-rwxr-xr-x 1 pi pi 2122 Dec 19 2018 run01.wav
-rwxr-xr-x 1 pi pi 2104 Dec 19 2018 run02.wav
-rwxr-xr-x 1 pi pi 2138 Dec 19 2018 run03.wav -
Thanks so much. I do have samples enabled in the CFG file which is good. How do I tell which ROMSET I have? Is there an easy way? If not, should I re-download 0.78 for the best experience? Sorry for the newbie questions. Working through it all is fun though.

If the games are playing fine with mame2003 then I wouldn't worry about the romset itself, just the sounds for the right romset. Maybe check the permissions of the sounds as well, I think as long as they are world readable then its fine.
I'm pretty sure I used the same sound files for mame2003, when I moved over to advanced-mame I just copied them to it's samples directory. It's a different romset though.
I double checked and the sound files I am using are from Twisty's mame sound collection.

@stoney66 Many thanks. I was getting desperate with dkong and proper sound settings.
