I have a relatively unconventional setup for a PI. My desktop runs Arch Linux, with PulseAudio to get 5.1 surround. I have RetroPi installed with pulse to use the sound server on my desktop (the monitor is shared via an HDMI switch). This was working well.

Lately, I fire up a game (platform doesn't seem to make a difference) and the sound is horribly distorted and corrupted. After around 5 minutes, it suddenly and inexplicably cleans up and plays correctly.

I have no idea what could be causing this, and why it corrects itself after a few minutes.

      Ideas?

NB. I have no sound issues on the desktop whatsoever.

Finally fixed this, and just in case anyone has a similar unconventional setup and the same problems, the solution was, on the pi, edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and change:

        load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0

        to

        load-module module-udev-detect
