I have an old Raspberry Pi Zero W with a working Retropie image. If I upgrade to Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 (I know that there isn't an official retropie image out yet for this model) can I use the same micro sd without wiping and rewriting? Or will I have to go through the steps again with a different Retropie version/image?

No, you cannot use an old image - it will not run on a PI4, which needs a newer Raspbian version with updated kernel/firmware.

If you want to set up a new model, simply clone your /home/pi/RetroPie folder to your PC, install RetroPie on the new SD card, delete the new /home/pi/RetroPie folder, replacing it with the existing one.

Random image I found. Had a driver I needed.
