Fixed problem with samples, but still wondering why
-
So I had an issue with samples not playing (even though it was working previously). The popup at game start would say "samples not found". I read up and everything says home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003/samples/ is the proper location. This is where I had the files to begin with. But again, not working.
So I discovered that putting them in the roms, at \roms\mame-libretro\mame2003\samples seemed to work. My question is why? Because I still don't understand. Is there some path setting in the core options I'm missing?

They work for me, using either
arcade
ormame-libretro
as ROM folder. Did you reset your RetroArch's configuration or something to that effect ? -
Well, i was working out some various problems and trying to get certain options working so I have messed with it a lot. I can't say for certain where my root retroarch.cfg came from but I feel like I either had it generated or copied the rp dist one and then started playing with menu options.
I might have an old one saved on a backup and I know I have some saved on the pi from the save new configuration file option. Am I likely to find something there if I diff old vs. new?
If you have a working version, can you tell me if there are sample or sample directory options in yours that I just don't have? Also looking to know if I should be looking in the main retroarch.cfg or the mame core one. I'm guessing MAME.
Thanks.

You can check the system's
retroarch.cfg
- in/opt/retropie/configs/mame-libretro
. I don't think there's a core option that influences the search for samples, it's most likely the RetroArch'ssystem
folder path was reset (?). -
Ah, yes I was just coming across that. I found an old config that had
system_directory = "~/RetroPie/BIOS"
and my new one is
"default".Does that sound like it might be it?
I was searching for "sample' when I realized I should be searching for a dir, but BIOS wasn't showing up in a search except in the old file. -
system_directory
should be "~/RetroPie/BIOS". I think it defaults to the current content dir (ROM folder) if not set.
