I'm running updated (as of yesterday I checked for updates) Retropie on RPi4, the external hard drive is a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 500 GB (not independently powered). The keyboard and mouse are not bluetooth, it's a simple Logitech with USB dongle and no previous issues over the last few days of having the RPi set up.
The really questionable piece for me is that the mouse works perfectly fine, while the keyboard stops functioning. I can pull up YouTube and click around everything just fine, but cannot type a word. This includes typing into the terminal...
My goal was to mount the "retropie-mount" folder between the RPi and the USB HD, but that doesn't seem to be working either. For clarity; mouse/keyboard work before USB HD plugged in, keyboard stops working when USB HD plugged in while mouse works, mouse/keyboard work after disconnecting USB. Thoughts?

Can you try adding over_voltage=1 to config.txt?
