Installing on top of Ubuntu 20.04 on Raspberry Pi 4
-
Has anyone successfully installed Retropie on a Raspberry Pi4 running Ubuntu 20.04? I recently installed Ubuntu on my Pi4, but now I'm not sure if I should just follow the instructions for Ubuntu (PC - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Debian/#installation), or if the ARM processor on the Pi4 would require a different approach?
-
@kmancali Ubuntu isn't supported on the RPI.
-
It actually is now (as of May 8th).

@kmancali Found this website because I am having an issue with the RPI4 and ubuntu.... I get an error on the basic install Could not install package(s) and there are a bunch of them included libasound2-dev libudev-dev libraspberrypi-dev and a lot of others.

@kmancali I'm referring to what retropie supports.
You need to use Raspbian for RetroPie on the RPI.
-
Thanks, and maybe this is a very naive question, but can you explain why RetroPie does install on Ubuntu for PC, but not on Ubuntu for Raspberry Pi?
-
@kmancali Because a PC is a different platform, with different drivers and hardware, has a different set of packages available and as a result the process of installing RetroPie on a PC platform is not the same as on a Pi or a similar SBC.
If someone wishes to add support for Ubuntu on a Pi, then they'll have to modify the current setup script to include this system and check the compatibility of the package scripts included (install/setup/functionality).

I would love to have this supported also. Would it be worth submitting an Issue on the repo, and then we can work on a PR to support this?

There's no point in submitting an issue just for the sake of it - a forum post is functionally the same. PR's are always welcomed, but if you'd want guidance for developing it, I recommend using the forum instead of Github.
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
