Very specific N64 controller issue

Hi peeps. So I've mapped my n64 dragon controller on the latest version of Retropie on my Pi4. I use the LR-Mupen64Plus emulator for my 64 ROMs at the moment. For some reason when I'm on the game list and press down on the analogue stick it just chooses a random game in that list as opposed to the next game below. Now analogue down when in the game works fine in actual game play and also when in the options list on ES which is crazy. Just on my ROMS list it goes weird. Any idea what could cause this? Thanks
