Romsets between Mame and Final Burn Alpha
-
Mame2003, FBA and FBA-Next all have a specific Romset that you should use for each one. You should get the respective rom from the correct romset, try them each out and settle on the one you prefer.
I believe FBA and MAME share some drivers, which is why the same rom might work for both. However, I would not rely on this. Getting the correct romsets will eliminate compatibility issues when trying to optimize your arcade setup.

Generally speaking, MAME is more accurate, but FBA is faster. however, given that lr-fba-next in retropie is based on current MAME, and mame2003 (for example) is based on 2003 mame, i would guess that lr-fba-next is in most cases the best emulation for any game that both it and mame2003 support. it might even be slightly slower than mame2003, who knows.
that said, i found it easier to just use a MAME 0.78 romset and use mame2003 for all of those, and then get the handful of games that ONLY run in FBA (streetfighter III, for example), and run those in fba-next. there's a few games that have problems in 2003 that i've switched over to FBA for, but i don't really feel the need to swap to FBA-next unless i can see 2003 struggling.

@dankcushions , yes I like FBA-next for SFIII 3rd Strike and Neo Geo games. For those games I think I have the latest ROMs. I wanted to see other performance comparions like X-men Vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Vs. Capcom, Alien Vs. Predator (so many Vs.), Final Fight, Puzzle Bobble, Altered Beast, etc. Mame2003 was my starting point and I got that advice from you. Now I am trying to dabble further into FBA and newer ROMs to see how I like it. The ROMs list for FBAnext is crazy.

Tonight I downloaded the latest sets of TMNT and Turtles in Time and ran them on FBA-next. I noticed right away that the first game looked better and the sounds were better. As for Turtles in Time it seemed close enough to Mame2003 but I'm going to stick with FBA-next. I will continue to test all my favorite games that are compatible with FBA-next in the same manner.
As a side note how do I get into service menus with FBA-next?

Contra Mame2003 > Contra FBA-next
Double Dragon Mame 2003 < Double Dragon FBA-next
Most Capcom CPS1/2 games run very similar on both cores but FBA-next displays the correct aspect ratio by default.

The FBA part of retroarch pretty much gets updated to the latest release of FBA which is great for updated drivers but also shows stuff that's still beta and doesn't really run at all (MK2-UMK3). It's a damn shame no one at retroarch updates the drivers for mame2003 as there has been a lot of corrections and new games added since 2003 that can easily work on the RPI that can make it the best M.A.M.E. to use.
What they did with Coinops for the old Xbox which has added a lot of the fixes and newer games while still using an older M.A.M.E. is what someone with the skills should do for the RPI to make reteopie even better.

lr-mame2003 is open source so anyone is welcome to update it.
I would be happy to add later drivers to if I knew what problem they solved, and where to get the source of the drivers. as long as they aren't from too many versions beyond 0.78 they should be OK to integrate.
coinops appears to be closed source, so not much help.

I hope they do continue to get games running properly and make Arcade less of a cluster fest of cores to use for different games. When Arcade MK2/UMK3 work without major issues, I will be the happiest user on this forum for some time. I would even donate to get this happening, show me where to sign. Nevermind, I see where to Donate. But it doesn't directly go to the MK2/UMK3 cause, haha. I donated though, I have to support and give props to this project.
After work today I'll be back at it in the Arcade ROMs folder. :)

While coinops is closed source, there is MAMEoXtras done by Gamez Fan and his source is available though the MAME used on this one is based off is 0.84 but should be still possible to use the drivers on 0.78.
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
