cant set up arcade buttons and joystick

Hey . if anyone can help me . I built my own arcade machine based on a raspberry pi 3+ and i used both retropie imageand custom rom sets witth retropie but I can not set up the arcade classic controllers . system finds 2 controllers but when I try to set up it sets only "move up " and then nothing . no joystick no buttons . with external usb ps one or Nintendo controller works perfect.does anyone know how to set up classic joystick and buttons?
