I know this is a classic question when it comes to RetroPie, but I'm still at a bit of a loss as to what to do. I've obtained what I believe to be a decent MAME 0.78 romset, yet only the older games seem to work. Stuff like KOF/Golden Axe/Street Fighter etc. don't seem to want to boot even across different cores. Others will load but then display a message about bad checksums etc.

Do I need to find a better romset? I've avoided Arcade up until now because of the horror stories I've read!

      Controllers: 8bitdo SN30 Pro+ / 8bitdo SFC30

It's expected your 0.78 romset isn't going to work across different Mame cores. You should only be using mame2003 or mame2003+ with your 0.78 romset. If you get a bad checksum error with mame2003 then I suspect your roms are not from the 0.78 romset.

So in theory should everything from the 0.78 romset run with mame2003? Because it sure doesn't right now

@sad_muso some ROMs still won't work correctly with mame2003. Let's face it, it's 17 years out of date. Mame has come a long way since then. For KOF I would recommend using finalburn neo. However, iirc, goldenaxe should work fine and street fighter should definitely work with Mame 2003.

@sad_muso if mame2003 (aka mame 0.78) is complaining about a set supposedly made for mame2003, then your set is crap.
