I know this seems like more work than needed, especially since they sell USB controllers, and adapters into USB... but i really dont want to mess with an adapter, and i really REALLY love the Hori N64 controllers.

Im willing to take on a project, just curious if anyone has info for actually completing this process, or should i just succumb to using an adapter
(I had HELL with 3 different adapters for SNES... I dont trust them too much......)

      Thanks!

Of course it's yours to do with as you wish, but I would hate to cut into a $100+ controller like the 'Hori Mini Pad' if I didn't have to. I personally use a Raphnet N64 adapter V2.9 and I am very happy with it. I believe it is currently the only adapter on the market that supports the 'Rumble Paks' without the need for drivers and the company itself is run by gamers and techies who really care about what they put out. As I understand it, version 3.0 will even support 'Memory Paks' which has only ever been available previously in the famous 'Adaptoid' adapter from years ago. All that said, I can't confirm that it works with the Hori Mini Pad, as I don't have one personally, but it is listed as being supported on their website.

yea you're kind of bringing back why I just didn't want to do it... I'll take your word for it and just buy that specific adapter if you say it works.

Was it plug and play with all buttons working, or did you have to build a custom controller config for the n64 controller?

EDIT: I just clicked that link, wow!!!! thats the kind of thing I saw once/was expecting I needed to convert. Thats EXACTLY the adapter I would like, Thanks!!!!

Just plug and map like any normal USB controller and RetroPie is happy as a clam.
