Pi4 performance on Mame with CRT shaders
-
First of all i would like to say hello to everybody.
Now to the point. I want to build a retropie system that will run arcade games on my TV. I currently own rapsberry 1 so it could be an option for me without any further investments. my question is will handle MAME roms? From the most demanding i would play Mortal Kombat 3 and sf 3 series. I guess if its ok with those it will be OK with others i want to play. Ideally I would like to use CRT shaders as well but im pretty sure i would expect too much from the old Pi1.I also consider investing in the Pi4 (would you go for 8gb or less?). But then my requirements would rise and the question is does Pi4 handle well actually using those CRT (scanlines and curvature) shaders. Can Pi4 handle all the games in MAME catalog? How is the emulation of Dreamcast and Gamecube?
Thanks for replies

@diegomaradona21 raspberry pi 1 - nope. not even without shaders. pi4 should do well with SF3 via fbneo (not sure about MK3), plus shaders.

you're fine with 2GB for retropie (probably 1GB, even) - doesn't need extra RAM.
Can Pi4 handle all the games in MAME catalog?
no, even the best x86 PC can't handle ALL MAME games, as far as i'm aware. however, you should expect a pi4 to handle most 2D games, excluding perhaps some of the post 2000 shooters. also note that we default to older versions of MAME (current MAME needs much more power) so the MAME catalogue will be limited to whatever MAME supported in 2003, etc.
(on pi4) How is the emulation of Dreamcast and Gamecube?
dreamcast = mostly good, apart from windows CE games. gamecube = possible (but not good), but not via retropie right now.

ok thanks. I meant 2d games actually (maybe plus tekken and soul blade / edge but not a must). Is there any list of games supported by mame in 2003? or maybe which specific version of mame that is?
does anyone have an experience running mk3 with shaders on pi4?

any cooling needed?

each version of MAME will have a corresponding gamelist.xml or dat file which contains the list of games it supports (however nothing about performance). there are compatibility lists linked in the retropie MAME docs but they are fairly broken right now (soon to be retired), and don't contain pi4 information.
soul blade and tekken's playstation versions will run great.

i use the flirc case which acts as a heatsink. never had any overheating issues, but it depends on your room temperature, humidity, ventilation, etc.
