I've got my RetroPie folder mounted to my NAS for maximum rom storage! I've recently set up my NAS for external access. What I want to know is can I use the external hostname or IP address to mount my RetroPie folder to my NAS if I were to take my pi with me on the road? Permanent remote access to all my games would be incredibly badass don't you think?

I guess you can setup your NAS for external access, but that would expose your NAS to the internet, which is not something you'd want.

@mitu well of course everything is password protected. I wouldn't expose it to the internet without authentication.

@johnnytwolegs said in Mounting RetroPie folder to external server:

That doesn't prevent a brute force attach to guess your password - without any firewall restrictions, the password protection is easily breakable.

@mitu assuming I've taken the necessary precautions, do you know of a way to accomplish what I'm trying to do?

@johnnytwolegs It entirely depends on your network setup.

If you NAS is connected to the internet, then I guess it's a matter of configuring the firewall to allow access to the CIFS ports and making sure that file sharing is enabled for the internet interface. If you have a router in-between, you might need to forward the CIFS ports from the network interface to your NAS box.

Again, a configuration I strongly suggest against, since it exposes your NAS to the internet.
