There are no pre-built binaries for x86/x86-64, all installations are done via source installs - that's why the command you posted throws an error.
I don't know where you found that SDL2 installation command, but you should follow the official installation docs - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Debian/ - and start with a basic installation.

@mitu Sure, not sure if this is the file. Found from $HOME/RetroPie-Setup/logs . Should note I have downloaded the SDL tar ball aswell and compiled that. Still does not work.

EDIT: file is too big for pastebin and I am not paying for dropbox

I don't see the errors in the log file - installation seems to have worked fine.

@mitu alright, so how do I tackle the issue of emulationstation not loading?

Are you running EmulationStation from the terminal or from the desktop environment ? Can you post the output of glxinfo ?

@mitu there is no gui install. I assume I need to install one?

                    glxinfo
                    Error: unable to open display

You need a desktop environment to run EmulationStation (and RetroPie) on a PC installation. I think it's described in the topic you linked and it's also part of the docs page - where it instructs you to install the desktop version of Ubuntu.
