End Kernel panic error booting from ext

put a pre made img onto an ext drive, copied the start4.elf and put it in my nespi and now I get this error:
End Kerlel panic not syncing: system is deadlocked on memory

any help would be appreciated

Premade image from https://retropie.org.uk/download/ or somewhere else? If the latter, third-party images are not supported here, as they can have unknown modifications that may cause problems the official images do not.

If the problem occurs with an official image, please provide the information that's asked for in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.
