@Sineater224 Please add more info about your system, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

On a Pi, RetroPie is not meant to be run from the desktop - this is not a supported configuration. Boot your system directly into RetroPie, see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#how-do-i-boot-to-the-desktop-or-kodi, and you shouldn't have any issues.

@mitu Ive had it working before, but I had to reset and now its not working. Im using a pi4 4gb, running on the lastest raspbian. Doing a retropie sd card is not an option for me, as retropie is just a side project ontop of my current project.

You don't need to install the RetroPie image, installation on-top of Rasbian is supported - however running it from the desktop is not. It might work now, but there's no guarantee it will work later on, since it's not a configuration that's tested or taken care of.

@mitu Currently Im using the desktop for other stuff. Is there a way to disable the desktop to run retropie? I can make it so when retropie launches is stops the desktop, I just dont know the command.

Yes, it's in the FAQ link that I posted. It will re-configure your login settings so that on boot it starts EmulationStation, the front-end, instead of the graphical login/desktop.
You can also just exit out (to console) from the desktop and start EmulationStation by running emulationstation from the console.

@mitu Im actually running the pi as a head unit for my car, and the head unit program exits to desktop, so I want to launch retropie from there.

@sineater224 you can run emulationstation from a desktop launcher, and when you have in emulationstation run nes without a problem, then after play for a while go back to the desktop with start-》 quit-》exit from emulationstation.

The emulators in retropie can run without launch emulationstation but you need to tell the path to the rom, and lr-cores are more difficult and you have problems in someones that way.

But are dirty and unsupported ways to do it! I make one left mouse menu to launch any rom of n64 with that option, but it was with the emulator not for lr-core. I know you can launch from terminal using the exact directive that use retropie. You can look that in:

                    /opt/retropie/configs/nes/emulators.cfg

And for the other hand, if you only are interested in nes, why dont install it from Add Software, is not so new and cool like Retropie but you only want play nes, so, like you do in pc, install the emulator.

I will try how to replicate without problems, the dirty way and comment the steps.
