      Hi,
      Im a bit new to this and this forum has been fantastic help. I've fixed audio issues, which EmulationStation to vertical. But this last one - even though I find lots of posts I cant seem to figure out.
      Im setting up a simple Ikea, cocktail table 80s arcade for the kids - Only using vertical games like DonkeyKong , Space Invaders, Scramble etc.
      Im really struggling to get MAME to run vertical taking up a "semi-correct looking" amount of screen space. I'm not looking to match originals just something that looks right and is playable.

      Ive done the :-
      video_allow_rotate = true
      video_rotation = 3
      This give me the first picture attached.
      image1.jpeg image0.jpeg

      I then found on the forums about using aspect ratio so I tried (see second pic):-
      aspect_ratio_index = "19"
      video_aspect_ratio_auto = false
      video_aspect_ratio = 0.75
      image3.jpeg image2.jpeg

      This gets the height correct BUT the horizontal is way off.
      If I tweek nothing seems to change too much. My display is an old dell 12" 1024x768 (or 768x1024 as its not verticle)

      Pi Model or other hardware: 3B+
      Power Supply used: errrr came with it
      RetroPie Version Used 4.6:
      Built From:(Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website
      USB Devices connected: Arcade Joysticks (2), Keyboard
      Controller used: Arcade joystick and buttons from amazon
      Connection to screen: HDMI

      Emulation Station look fine:-

        @StuDev said in Vertical Screen ES - perfect MAME - not so much:

        aspect_ratio_index = "19"
        video_aspect_ratio_auto = false
        video_aspect_ratio = 0.75

        this doesn't make sense to me. you shouldn't need to change the aspect ratio - the aspect ratio should be the same no matter what screen you use. i would remove above settings.

        please remove, then fill out https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first (be mindful to include the verbose log)

            @dankcushions thanks for the reply - that is what I did in the first screen shot and as you can see its squashed on the vertical but full horizontal.
            I did
            video_allow_rotate = true
            video_rotation = 3

            and it came out as
            image1.jpeg

              @StuDev right, i understand that, i just wanted it back to a sane config so we can fix the underlying issue - please provide verbose log and all the other stuff as requested.

                @dankcushions thanks mate - i did see the comment on the verbose logs.
                In learning about how to trigger them and retrieve them, I went into the RetroPie configuration editor and then notice there was an Aspec ratio setting. I set this to 4:3 and everything is perfect now.

                Glad Im solved it and thanks for your time.

                Excellent forum by the way

                So you were right I only need the rotation part and then needed to set the aspec ratio.
                video_allow_rotate = true
                video_rotation = 3

                This was the magic line:-
                aspect_ratio_index = "0"
