PPSSPP has a configuration menu, you can go into the settings menu, to Controls and then the Control Mapping section allows you to set your controls. Try mapping L and R there, if they work in other games, they should be recognized by PPSSP also.

How do I access PPSSPP settings? -

How do I access PPSSPP settings?
if you're using lr-PPSSPP ... then your HOTKEY setup
if you using PPSSPP Standalone ... then press ESC on a Keyboard
For Both emulators ... button configs are found via going into Settings and then Controls > Control Mapping

@ReadyPlayaWon thanks!
I removed the other PPSSPP I had and installed the lr-PPSSPP package, the controls all worked out of the box!
Thank you again!
