Pi Model or other hardware: 4b
Power Supply used: (If using a Pi) usb-c from Canakit
      RetroPie Version Used : 4.7.1
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website
USB Devices connected: keyboard, xbox360 type controller
      Controller used: xbox360 type controller
      Error messages received: none
      Verbose log (if relevant):
Emulator: advmame 3.9, installed from Binary
      How to replicate the problem:

Finally got a pi4 today, moved all my configs/roms over from my pi3b and advmame games are super super slow. I also had this issue with pi3b and remembered that only my 4k TV's had this problem.

I assume this is some type of resolution setting? When I use my older TV's/arcade bartop TV all is good. Is there some type of auto video setting that I should hard set for advmame or would the setting just depend on the TV I am connecting to?

I find even with a pi4 i can't run anything past 1080p, also make sure you have your game mode set on your tv.

I will admit i have not attempted to use advmame yet, so i am just kinda throwing out suggestions.
