It would appear that the virtual keyboard is hardcoded to the "X" button on the keyboard. Is there any way to change that because it makes playing text adventures like Zork very difficult.

You can remap the button/key and remove the action from it - see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/RetroArch-Configuration/#core-input-remapping. You can also press Scroll Lock to toggle game focus mode in RetroArch and disable all hotkeys.

@mitu Is there a way to make it load up in that "game focus" mode?

I don't know any settings to make it start in Game Focus mode by default - not sure it is possible.
EDIT: you can install the standalone
atari800emulator and use the runcommand launch menu to use it for text adventure games.
