Has anyone actually got a 'finished' retropie setup??
-
As I once again spend half my day messing with my Pi400, getting a few more roms, trying to get TI99-4A working (only so I can test it, make sure it works and then never load a game up again...) I was wondering if anyone has actually got a setup that they are completely happy with, that they start up just to play games, and don't do any messing around with in an effort to 'improve' it?

@chubsta I'm sure somebody does, but to me tinkering is half the fun.

@chubsta i think i have my Pi3 to the point its good enough that everything works and looks good so im happy with it.
granted i have a Pi4 now that im playing around with so im not sure how much of this thing called "play" ill do on it. :) -
@chubsta
I have a pi4, and I literally play the hell out of it. I set it up around march-ish. I'm playing the Dragon Warrior series now, on DW3 at the present and playing DW4 next. Then I'll give the Final Fantasy series a try. After my Nintendo fix, I'll start my old SNES faves. My 5 yr old boy loves to play Frogger and Mike Tyson Punch Out.
I absolutely love my pi4, and I'm not computer literate enough to do too much tinkering, for better or worse. -
I have an upright arcade cabinet downstairs (3B) and a custom arcade cocktail cabinet (3B+) in the dining room that I play almost every day. Both run RetroPie with EmulationStation and Retroarch. As far as 'finished'... uh, 99.9%? I haven't taken the plunge on the "4" yet.

I had an install over Ubuntu that worked great out of the box. All my kids (4 of them, ages 7-14) and me played games for about a week.
Then I wanted to get the rest of the "stuff" working and choose to scrap the full Ubuntu desktop as it was way to slow when jumping between RetroPie, Kodi, and a web browser for Netflix, YouTube, & Disney+.
I have had an Android TV box for a long time, so am used to having all this stuff.
An install with Lubuntu 20 & 18 was giving me a bunch of problems, so I had the bright idea to try starting with Ubuntu server and build up from there. An error out of the box led me to these forums where I discovered MizterB/RetroPie-Setup-Ubuntu..... the install is running now and I expect it to work out of the box as well as the first run did, but with better performance. (using a free HP Compaq 8510p w/4GB ram and an HDMI output to the tv)
update: It didn't work :(

Yup. Got a 3b+ in an upright cab, customized gameslist, arcade only, kioskized operation: anyone can safely step up and enjoy a fully working device without ifs, ands or buts.
Only tinkering I do now is trying to get to that infernal cement factory level in Donkey Kong.

You just reminded me...I haven't played Mr. Do! or Spatter today.

It's pretty much no-stress, exploration of old arcade games. -
That depends on what you mean by finished
if you mean by installed software to get the basics to work, I've already done that like many others have.
But then I've started getting new ideas on what I want to do with my RetroPie on the P4, and now I'm beginning to see why people like making them. One idea that has popped into my head recently is connecting a Retrode 2 to it with some woodwork to make an artificial game console. With a keyboard and mouse trackpad combo glued onto it, it would be a beast of a retro setup which doubles as a basic PC for web browsing and music.
