Scrapping vs scraping
-
Pretty much since I started working with game data scraping I've been wondering why so many people call it "scrapping". Many people even misspell Skyscraper as Skyscrapper.
When did it turn into "scrapping" and why do people keep calling it this? I've seen it mentioned a lot in relation with ScreenScraper, so perhaps it's a French thing? I dunno.
The English term comes from the process of "data scraping" as described here.
-
It even seems this is a pretty common misspelling in general. Seems odd to me as scrapping means to disband, trash or delete something.
EDIT: And here they even use both! Wrong in the headline, correct in the article.
-
@muldjord it's supposed to be "scraping" because it is "data scraping" that is being performed. Pretty sure it just comes down to a few people spelling it incorrectly and that spreading and the fact the rules for spelling in English can be a bit odd at times.
EDIT: That being said, it drives me a bit batty every time I see "scrapper/scrapping" etc.
-
@simpleethat Yeah, that's why it baffles me - if it was just a spelling error from time to time. But it really seems to have spread to the point where some people seem to think it's actually called "scrapping". I see it all the time, both on here and on reddit.
I wouldn't say it bothers me to the point where I would try to correct people when they use it incorrectly - life's too short for that. I just find it odd how these incorrect use of terms can sort of spring to life, take hold, and just won't let go again. And in some cases even become the norm.
-
@muldjord here in the UK the word 'scrapping' is also another word for fighting (as in having a 'scrap' in the playground at school). It always makes me chuckle when people write that they are having trouble when scrapping their roms (why are you trying to fight them? What have they ever done to you?).
Maybe the forum should take the same stance as it currently does with 3rd party images - you'll get no help here until you learn to spell correctly!
-
@omen_peter Little unfair that considering for many on this forum English isn't there first language.
Often, someone like that will maybe search for a thread using "scrapping", and get a result, so they think that is the correct term.
Think we should all make allowances, mind you one thing that REALLY gets me, and you see it everywhere even from people who's 1st language IS English and that is things like - "Can someone give there thoughts on this", aaaarrrggghhhh it's THEIR for Cliffs sake!! -
@impman66 I'm pretty sure @omen_peter was joking ^^

Oh, and I'm totally with you on the 'there' vs 'their' debate!
Ok, totally OT, or maybe not and just 16t - but I cannot resist: what exactly is it, that is happening over here with us??? Okok, i got it... I am not a native EN speaker and I have my problems with then/than etc., but truly there/their? Don't you mean misspelings of they're/their or such? (Edit: And don't you dare to believe that I have no sense of humour/to read my words as if I felt offended :P, i simply couldn't resist %^] )
P.S.: Maybe we can add some extra retro spice to this thread (vs. threat, another classic): Does anyone remember the time (16bit Amiga times) where the (german) community started to use the term 'looser' for people they considered to be 'losers' and became really upset if people where trying to correct/educate 'em on their misspelling?
-
Like @simpleethat, I cringe a little every time people use "scrapping" for "scraping", or "scrapper" for "scraper". Aside from the very different meaning of these words, it shows how bad many people are in just repeating what they're reading somewhere, as nobody just came up with "scrap(p)ing" for collecting artwork and metadata automatically β they've read about it somewhere. And somewhere between reading und using it in their own posts, the "p" got added in their mind. π€¨
As for their/there/they're, I can understand why people keep confusing those in writing, because English has this particular problem of countless harmonyms β words that sound the same, but are spelled differently. In this video, a young US American living in Germany explains this quite briefly and concisely.
If the whole 6:29 minutes are too long for you, jump to
2:50 β for some examples of inconsistant speaking and spelling, and
4:39 β for the horror of English harmonyms π -
@clyde We've got the same problem in french. It would already be a total nightmare without all the exceptions, and the exceptions to exceptions, all the dozens of words that should be spelled exactly the same but aren't - because why make it easy on anybody?
-
@zering At least we (les FranΓ§ais & Germans) have the gendered articles in common, to confuse any foreigners who dare to learn our languages. π
-
@clyde I wonder if that's why we're historically rivals ; because we both want our languages to be the most confusing? ^^
-
I never really had problems knowing when to use there, their or they're. In my mind there very different. Their are a couple of friends I have though, they're kids do seem to mix it up quite often.
But seriously, its so simple. If it where a difficult thing to get right I would understand, but it really isn't. I don't know were it comes from.That almost physically hurt to write. :D
Joking aside, I noticed that I do actually sometimes get it wrong, writing they're instead of their. But I know it's wrong when I re-read it to verify what I've written. So it's a subconscious thing.

Verifying your post before sending also seems to be a dying breed of habits. That said, Murphy's Law applies there, too. No matter how often I re-read my words, I still see some errors only after posting. π₯΄

In bash-fu, it would be
the{ir,re,y're}
. Alas, I don't know enough about regular expressions to build one for this. -

Same here. And it also depends on the technical level of what I'm writing. I very often, on here, find that my thoughts are still bubbling on after posting, resulting in several edits until my mind is finally at ease. :D I suspect that can be quite confusing for someone who is already posting a reply to my initial post.

@muldjord Dito...
As a cyberpunk GM/player (GM in times of R.Taslorians 2013/2020 settings, player since to nowadays cycle still), I am really puzzled somehow by the thoughts how a direct human/machine interface would add to this ;P -
i take it for granite that people know how words and expressions work.
Yes, I'm being ironic...
this joke is just to tie me over till the next one.
kinda like cutting off my nose despite my face...
i'll stop
