I apologize in advance as I'm sure this in the docs and discussions somewhere, but I just can't seem to find it.

I'm trying to map buttons on my Microcenter Two Player USB Fight Stick with Trackball (with added Spinner) - (impressive piece of hardware for the price BTW).
I downloaded the newest RTP image from this site on Monday.
I guessed at the button config for the controller when EM first started and config'd what I thought to be the minimum. (I'm using MAME2003.)

I want to map specific buttons (differently) for Missile Command and Tempest.
My issue is when I hit the "left missile base launcher" button, not only does it fire the missile as it
      should, but the game's "service menu"(I think that's what it's called) pops-up.

I've looked (everywhere it seems) to determine where the SM button (hotkey?) is defined, with no luck. I know which button I'd like to config, but I just can't seem to find where the config is.

      Thanks in advance.

@grand_national you'll have to be more specific with the term "menu". If you're pressing "select + x" you're probably getting the retroarch (green) menu. If you're pressing "R2" as it's mapped on your retropad you're probably getting the mame menu (black and white). Properly configuring your controller in emulationstation is important. If you are unsure you might try posting a picture of your controller which could help someone assist you.

The mame menu has two options:
        Input general
        Input this game

Input general is the default buttons the core will use.
Input this game is to override those defaults for specific games.

@grand_national you need to show a screenshot.

service menu is entered pressing F2: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/lr-mame2003/#service-menu

mame menu is entered pressing TAB or R2: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/lr-mame2003/#mame-menu

I guessed at the button config for the controller when EM first started and config'd what I thought to be the minimum.

does not inspire confidence... what layout did you use?
