XBox games on 4GB of RAM/can one add RAM to the Pi4?
-
Hey guys, sorry if this has been definitively covered already here, I tried Googling it and most of the answers were from 2012:
So IS the 4GB Pi4 capable of adding RAM? Or are you essentially stuck with what came with it? (I saw an article on Seeedstudio-- not sure I'm OK to share the link here-- that you can create RAM disks, however I'm not sure if that's the same thing).
I currently have a Pi4 w/ 4GB RAM that I mainly use for console gaming, and so far, I see no performance issues (granted most of these games are pre-95).
Part of the reason I ask is that my old XBox recently gave out (the power doesn't stay on, tried it w/ 2 different power cords & it's been suggested that it's a capacitor issue and thus not worth fixing). Since most of the discs I played on it were classics anyway (namely the Capcom and Midway Classics compilations), and I've found working ROMs for Retropie, I'm kinda OK with not replacing it. However I'm not as sure if the newer games I enjoy-- namely Halo 1 & 2 and GTA3-- will function on a 4GB Pi (assuming I can even find functional ROMS of these games...).
Petty question I suppose (I suppose I could try to buy an 8GB Pi4, or just get an XBox 360, which I hear is backwards compatible), but figured that further knowing what my Pi4 is capable of could help me narrow down my options.
Thank you!!

@mortalwombat You can't emulate Xbox games on the Pi 4, there just isn't an emulator available for it. (or really a decent Xbox emulator period, outside of CXBX Reloaded).
As far as a dedicated Xbox games-machine, I'd say your best bet is to probably just get a used X360 or just another OG Xbox.

@superfromnd thank you very much for answering that (although I just heard from someone that the 360 was NOT backwards compatible/can't play Xbox games, so if someone else knows for sure please let me know, cuz otherwise it sounds like this faux repair/sales shop I spoke to earlier was just trying to fool me into buying a 360...).
Regardless of all that, CAN the Pi4 have more RAM added to it? Or are you just stuck with what it came with?

No, you can't add more RAM. If you need more, then you can buy the 8Gb model if you intend to use your Pi for more than RetroPie.

note that for retropie emulation purposes, there is no performance/compatibility benefit with >1GB RAM on pi systems. RAM size is simply not a bottleneck.
the 4GB pi4 model is relevant for those who want to the raspberry pi OS desktop, or as a server, etc but emulators for the systems that the pi supports don't have large RAM requirements.
