How can you play with this input lag ?
-
Hi, how can you play super mario brothers on a raspi4 with retropie ?,
it has so much latency.Should i place my joystick in the hi-speed port for less latency ?, no it has normally only 31250 baud.
I wanto play mario like on a NES.
Why is it so bad ?, i play responsive games only, no RPG.
Maybe all hardcore retropie fans are in fact RPG players only ?
Any comments ? thanks -
@wild-snail This is the result of a failed setup, not a failed platform. Your instant determination that pi4/retropie must be "bad" and that its users must only be a specific type of gamer all because you are having a personal setup issue is the very definition of poor taste.

@wild-snail
https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Input-Lag/i've completed super mario bros on a default retropie setup, fwiw. and that was a pi3 (pi4 will have even better input lag)
-
Thanks for the link, i read there are many settings.
Why not set this at once for each emulator the best setting, they know how fast a raspi4 is ? -
@wild-snail the best settings are what retropie sets as default. there are too many factors at play to safely set the more aggressive settings as retropie users may want to use shaders and/or overlays which also require significant overhead, and we have no way of benchmarking whole libraries of games to see if there's any frame drops.
if you have tested otherwise then feel free to contribute to https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/issues/3134

I wanto play mario like on a NES.
Historically, emulation had 1 additional frame of input lag non-reducible against real hardware. In the case of smb nes, you go from 0 frame to 1 frame, which is still ultra playable (except if you are ultra bad) when you compare it to some arcade shoot'em'up which had 7 frames of input lag on real hardware.
Nowaday, you can remove those additional frames by using features like runahead (it's not a fail-proof feature though), in some cases you can even remove input lag that actually exist on real hardware.@wild-snail said in How can you play with this input lag ?:

Because in many cases, best setting would depend on game and not on emulator, and there might be external factors affecting performances.

I did not know modern tvs are also a factor.
Besides that i also have stuttering going on in super mario brothers on NES.
Its far from perfect. -
@wild-snail If you have a 4k(UHD) TV, then lower the resolution to 1080p.
-
No i dont have.
