I saw this in the FAQ, that seems to be based on a problem from 2012:
      https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#does-super-mario-all-stars-work

I've got Super Mario All Stars in RetroPie and never noticed any problem with the default emulator lr-Snes9x. I just tested Super Mario Bros from All Stars with one and two controllers plugged in, and in both cases controller 1 worked entirely as expected.

Maybe the FAQ entry is needed for people that can't use lr-Snes9x, or maybe it is old and can be deleted?

Yes, it looks obsolete - the game seems to be working fine with just one controller in most lr-snes emulators. Maybe it was RetroArch's issue back in the day.
