Problem with extracting cheat file zip in retroarch

I have followed guides and managed to download the cheat file zip. But for me it does not extract the files after download. I have watched som youtube vids and the file immediately extracts automatically for them. I have no idea why it does not work for me. Have been reading forums and checking out vids but no one seems to have this problem.
I have tried to manually upload the cheats in the rom folder and yes, they are there but i cannot find them when trying out a game or activate them in some way.
Anyone know what could be wrong?

You mean you downloaded the cheats through RetroArch's menu and the unpacking fails after download ?
