Basic game instructions
-
I built a Retropie a couple years ago, recently through a friend I was able to download a lot of games. I've never been a gamer, I built this more as a Raspberry Pi project than a gaming one. But now I would like to play a few, I've tried a few but have no clue which button does what, run, jump, shoot, punch, or what the goal of the game is. Is there somewhere that has the basic instructions on how to play these games? I have two Xbox 360 controllers I know that not all emulators use the Xbox controllers but if I knew what I'm supposed to do I can figure out the right buttons.

@johnl52 wow that’s a complicated answer. There is no single way to tell you how to play a game unless there is a tutorial or something built into the game.
To complicate matters, the buttons letters in on consoles, a proper retropie configuration won’t correspond on an Xbox controller letters. Retropie configures based off physical location of buttons. Like the NES. It’s A and B are the opposite on and Xbox controller. On snes, the whole lettering is upside down. Saga genesis, abc becomes logically yba, on an Xbox controller xab. Arcade games have no consistency. Some will swap jump and fire, some have weird control scemes. Also different emulators map buttons differently.
I say just load up a game and play around like I as a kid in the 80s used to do and just figure it out.
Have fun. -
Try, in your favourite search engine, searching for the name of the game + game manual
Perhaps even better, search for the name of the game and walkthrough or playthrough and watch someone play it on YouTube for hints
As @lostless said, the buttons on your controller are likely to be mis-labelled, but that shouldn't affect your experience much.

Thanks, like I said I knew the buttons are different for the different but was just looking for the basics. I'll look for the walk throughs that's probably the best and just play around too.
thanks again

@johnl52
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/Many games from the last 30 years or so on consoles have guides, walkthroughs, cheat codes that can all be found there. Most of the time, a walkthrough will explain the controls for a game.
Another trick if you want to see what the instructions that came with the game look like, you can google
"[name of game] manual scan"
.
