ZesaruX game pad and keyboard functionality

Hi,
I’m running ZesaruX but can’t figure out how to get it to work with a gamepad (generic Nintendo type) and my usb keyboard (standard Mac keyboard).
Both work fine out side of ZesaruX.The gamepad doesn’t work at all and some of the keys on the keyboard aren’t mapped properly.
I can’t seem to find much about configuration.
I’m using a pi 3b+ and the latest Retropie/Emulationstation.
