Request Insights to Optimize Robotron Setup

I am an old school Robotron player. I even had an original game for about 10 years. I no longer have it....but I want to get back to playing Robotron, in an experience as close to the original arcade setup as is possible, using modern electronics, monitors, etc. On my old machine, my high score was over 5 million. So I was pretty serious about playing.
I've been reading various posts, most of which are years old. The biggest concerns about setting up a good robotron machine seems to center around the requirement for an excellent 8 way joystick.
I would appreciate any insights that experienced Robotron players might have with regards to emulator, joystick, etc. which could help me optimize my initial setup to play Robotron. Thanks.
