Well I dont actually want to cry! just a frustrated dad trying to set up his sons pi and learn some basic coding together.

I've managed to get retropie running on its own sd card without any issues, but wanting to run it on his main larger sd card, so there is less wear and tear on everything not needing to swap cards constantly.

      Raspberry Pi 4 8gb
      Raspbian GNU/Linux 10

RetroPie install attempted by following this guide
      https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Manual-Installation/

emulation station works, but entering into configuration menu, it flashes to the desktop before going back to the configuration menu. same with roms(I managed to fix this for a short time playing around in retropie setup installing packages etc, but now no longer working)

have uninstalled retropie and re installed. searched my ass off and am at my wits end(So sorry if this post does not align with forum layout guidelines I'm tired.)

Thank you for any advice you can give!

Per the install page you referenced above: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Manual-Installation/

The RetroPie SD image is built on top of Raspbian lite (Raspbian without the PIXEL desktop environment) RetroPie can also be installed on top of the full Raspbian but you can't run Retropie and PIXEL at the same time, you will need to logout of the PIXEL desktop environment in order to run emulationstation and the emulators RetroPie installs.

@mitu Thank you, That fixed it.

I changed it because I found emulation station running first was affecting the performance of the pi when doing normal desktop processes and it would quickly get annoying to have to exit emulation station and type startx to get to the desktop(for me let alone my son).

will go back to searching and see if i can figure something else out.
