JPB is a fantastic 1 and/or 2 player co-op game (video below), but I've seen around here and on reddit plenty of people have struggled to get the game going smoothly.

Pinged you all because I've managed to get past the first crash point that I believe you were all experiencing — you destroy 5 or 6 droids then as you move to the right of the screen, it crashes.

What solved it for me was turning off the music by pausing the game > audio settings. There is also an option to disable music in the main menu before you begin a game, but I'm unsure if that setting will stay set after closing/reopening/etc.

It's a shame about the music, I'm hoping now I've narrowed the issue (in my case and hopefully yours) that a fix/mod/patch can be applied so that music works!

Anyone who hasn't played this game check out the video below (click watch on YouTube button in the bottom left corner to get taken to a specific part I like from level one).

If some of the more knowledgeable RetroPie users (or someone with a Pi4) could share their best settings for running this game I would be super grateful!

I don't really know what I'm doing, its the first (and will most likely be the only) rom I use. The only setting I've configured is route the d-pad to an analog stick, and Disabling SMC Checks (speed hack) to prevent crashes, but I couldn't pin-point how much it helped or if its worth it, I just stumbled across it in a search online.

I also have not tested performance playing 2 player.. praying it works though because its one of the best co-op PS1 games IMO.

      • RetroPi 4.7.1, using the imager on osx
      • genuine power supply
      • PS3 controller (DUALSHOCK3 SIXAXIS) over USB (trying to reduce lag.. disabling wifi didn't help)
      • no usb devices, besides PS3 controller
