Creating Backup IMG with Win32DiskImager
-
Hello, I am trying to copy my entire Retropie image, and I followed the instructions here, but perhaps I missed something. The new SD card is the same size at 32GB.
I backed up my image on an external hard drive (H:):
Now I am trying to take that WinZip file(?) and write it to a fresh microSD (E:) but it created a new D: drive with boot instead? Now they both exist:
When I place this new written microSD into my Pi4, it attempts to start but then fails after a check, perhaps having to do with the letter. Anyone know where I went wrong? I am deathly afraid of messing up my actual setup lol.

@greenhawk84 I think you have to manually add the .img file extension to backups in order to write them to another SD card. You should be able to do that by just renaming the file you already have. Even if the new SD card is listed as 32 GB, there is a chance that it won't write because of slight differences in actual usable size.

This shows it already as a .img file:

@greenhawk84 Are you inserting the new SD card into the same Pi (or at least same type of Pi) you originally took the backup from?
An SD card with a Pi image on it showing two drives on a Windows computer is normal, due to how Windows interprets the Linux data. Windows is probably also telling you that the SD card has very little data on it.

@chaoseffect I think I got it, Win32DiskImager says something about formatting the E: drive after it writes, this time I selected nothing and put the SD card in the Pi4. Everything boots up as expected. I will use this new SDcard for a while to make sure everything is good.
