I just installed and configured a Pi 3B v1.2 with the retropie-buster-4.7.1-rpi2_3 image. During the configuration I installed Super Mario War from the optional packages. It plays fine with the keyboard, but when I use a bluetooth connected Xbox One controller every button press pauses the game. When the the game is un-paused, whatever the button was suppose to do happens (ex. - if I pressed the jump button, the games pauses, I un-pause it, then the character jumps). It looks like this is the same old issue from this post:

Re: Super Mario War control issue

I've found a few different forum posts with the same issue, but no recommendations to solve it. Is it a general bluetooth issue, or specific to Xbox One controllers? Has anyone found a solution? I'll be happy to provide whatever additional info that is needed. Thanks.
