Looking around the site, it doesn't look like there's been any progress on getting Killer Instinct to work (very well) on Retropie 4, short of running it off a PC. N64 runs, albeit sluggish.

Any new progress on running Killer Instinct (MAME) smoothly or is this just impossible on this hardware?

Even in a PC you'll need a decent processor, at least if you want accurate emulation. Until someone finds a miraculous optimization shortcut in KI's hardware emulation, I'd say yes, it's currently impossible in this hardware.

Your best bet for a Pi is looking for a patched/hacked version of the SNES version, and try to make it run in one of the available emulators.
Don't look them down, currently have audio and videos lifted from the arcade machine, and they are getting more feature-rich in each release, although with a few bugs.
Search for "killer instinct snes msu1" in Youtube.

@drdave79 There is no problem with the game. The problem is the pi. It's just too slow. Maybe you can get a playable speed in mame2003plus overclocked to as high as you can go (beyond 2Ghz) and using frameskip. There will be scratchy audio.

Didn't someone (think it was @quicksilver ) mention on the N64 version there's a strange workaround where if you leave the game for a minute or so it "corrects" itself and starts playing at normal speed?

@retropieuser555 yes if you use mupen64plus-gliden64 the game will start off running slowly. But if you let it run for about a minute or so it will become full speed for the rest of that playing session. I'm not exactly sure what is going on behind the scenes that causes this but it looks like something is being loaded into the pi's memory which is causing the emulator to not run fullspeed until it's finished loading. I have noticed this with KI and a handful of other N64 games.

@quicksilver that's interesting, I didn't know there were other games that have this behaviour? Sorry to hijack the thread but which are the others out of curiosity?

                  Maybe "dark rift" too

Are the ones I know of. Seems to only happen with gliden64.

a hacked original xbox could run it pretty well on a humble pentium 3:

...because there's an x86 dynarec which helped massively. however, MAME on ARM does not have such a luxury, which I don't see changing.
