When I try to run Wolfenstein 3D from wolf4sdl I get this error:

      Parameters:
      Executing: SDL1_VIDEODRIVER=dispmanx SDL_DISPMANX_WIDTH=1920 SDL_DISPMANX_HEIGHT=1080 /opt/retropie/ports/wolf4sdl/bin/wolf4sdl.sh "/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ports/wolf3d/vswap.wl6"
Wolf4SDL was not compiled for these data files:
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ports/wolf3d/vgahead.wl6 contains a wrong number of offsets (150 instead of 162)!

Please check whether you are using the right executable!
(For mod developers: perhaps you forgot to update NUMCHUNKS?)

But I definitely have the right files, taken from my Steam install. According to this page:

      https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Wolfenstein-3D/

the checksums are all correct for the Steam version:

      /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ports/wolf3d$ md5sum *.wl6
      a41af25a2f193e7d4afbcc4301b3d1ce audiohed.wl6
      2385b488b18f8721633e5b2bdf054853 audiot.wl6
      aa75133df873b660d2058425ca8539b3 config.wl6
      a4e73706e100dc0cadfb02d23de46481 gamemaps.wl6
      b8d2a78bc7c50da7ec9ab1d94f7975e1 maphead.wl6
      dec8939cff5a4ec27ae7b43e8f52ec28 vgadict.wl6
      8b40b5b785f898e229bf1c2f2e3ee003 vgagraph.wl6
      8e75e3ffb842ed3d08abe6ffea97b231 vgahead.wl6
      a6d901dfb455dfac96db5e4705837cdb vswap.wl6

The three Spear Of Destiny episodes I also have in the WOLF3D folder work fine, as does the shareware version of Wolfenstein. It's just the full Wolfenstein that doesn't. What could be up?

Raspberry Pi 3b and 8GB Raspberry Pi 4, both running Retropie 4.7.1 installed from scratch using Raspberry Pi Imager, with wired keyboard, wireless mouse and double arcade joystick attached.

This is driving me nuts. It's a 1K file, screwing everything up for no detectable reason. I've tried everything I can think of, downloading other versions from various places, renaming the (working) VGAHEAD files from the demo version and from Spear Of Destiny, and nothing will persuade wolf4sdl that it's the right file even though it has the right checksum and is in lower case and everything else it's supposed to be.

Does anyone have the current wolf4sdl (I deleted it and tried reinstalling both from binary and source) running with the full version of Wolfenstein? I need to at least know if it works for other people.

I use lr-dosbox-pure. Works good for Wolf3D and Spear. You get the benefit of configuring you controls in the RetroArch core, as well as the shader and overlays. Try it on the full version and see if that helps.

Load it, and select it from the runcommand menu when it comes up.

Go into Quick Menu and Controls. You'll see the list of controllers. You might have to play play around with the choices, but honestly it should work ok on default.

I find its easier to go with what works than to spend hours trying to make it work.

I think you got the wrong vswap.wl6:

              a6d901dfb455dfac96db5e4705837cdb vswap.wl6

The checksum above seems to indicate a file from the 3D Realms release, but the other files' checksums are from the GOG/Steam release. I tested with the GOG release and the game works fine.
