Looking to build a"stock Pi" image to use for single game arcade cabs

Re: How to make vector arcade games look their best
Im a NOOB with issues... im struggling. Im setting up several builds for my obscenely large gameroom... several single game, and a couple multicade.
@caver01 .... I realise the original post referenced above is quite old.... however i havent been able to find fresher info regarding this topic... the googler has let me down. I want to build a stock image to be able to use on several cabs in my gameroom as stand alone games..... Starting with a Tempest build. There is plenty of info on the Webernets about "silent direct to game boots" as well as "one touch" shutdowns for emulators running on a Pi etc. I wont ask for that info here unless there is something relevent you can add or suggest.
My first build is going to be a tempest cocktail. I will be using an I-pac2 for input ( i have a pair of original tempest spinners) and a vga monitor for display.
I want to build a stock Pi3B+( possibly a pi zeroW too) image to burn to new projects as necessary. Some will be vector and some raster. My main intent is an image that is as lite and slim as possible... ie A command line version of raspian(?) With an install of Advancemame. I dont wish to encumber the image with retropie/retroarch/or emulationstation et al for my base build. I'd prefer to burn an image to SD, drop my Roms, configure controllers and tweak the boot configuration line to fire the correct game and then be done. All without a front end as well.
I've read your original post and have a few questions being that Im a complete NOOB where the Pi is concerned. Im pretty fluent with windows and Dos(I have a dosmame cab w/pacman that boots straight and silent as well as retropie/daphne for a dedicated dragons lair) but am a complete retard when it comes to figuring out what Mr. Torvalds was thinking... though i can muddle through most the time. Things would be easier if it was more like DOS... lol
My main question is regarding your original post for Tempest in particular but also vector games in general... Is most of the info in the above referenced post for dialing in the "best" approximation of vector games still relevant?
If you could give me a general Idea of what you are running today that would be great. In particular, what build of Raspian and what version of Advancemame.(rom version too?) Also wondering if your recomended version of Raspian has wifi enabled out of the gate?( i burned a raspian buster lite to my pi zero and was unable to get wifi configured... my current situation is that i have no network to SSH in, but my phone as a hotspot will allow me to login as a network drive from my laptop as if the pi and laptop are on a router.) I gave up and went back to the 3B+ as wifi worked with the retropie/emulationstation image i burned for setting up daphne to run dragonslair right out of the gate... i got that hammered out in about 2 hrs... easy peasy that was... but i did have a good step by step howto.
Im also wondering if the in game controls configuration(tab key) in mame will recognize the I-pac(or zero delay, usb gamepads etc) without issues. Is it better to use retropie/emustation for initial config? And just run advmame under them with my silent boot/1 button shutdown?
And finally, will sound run right out of the bag(dragons lair did) or would there be potential configuration issues?
Im sorry there are a bunch of questions. Ive seen you on a few forums and you've always been helpful to those in need. I realize some games run better under other emulators.... I know I'll have several "stock" images dependent on which emulator I want and whether i want a frontend for multiples game cabs or not etc.
Most of what ive found is older posts or multiple emulators behind a frontend.... Im not finding much that is specific to my intended singular configuration.
I know the post is long.... sorry. I dont need an absolute step by step( and i'll figure out the command line stuff myself).... but if i could get a list of general details( like version info of the apps you use currently, as well as any needed update on your original post, etc) that would be very helpfull. I think others could also use a bit of fresh info as relates to your original Tempest "dial in" post 5 years ago.
Thank you in advance,
-Dylan
